YouthfulCities is a global initiative to rank the world’s top 100 cities from a youth perspective. Why? Simply put, cities are full of youth.
To contexualize this a little bit, studies show that over 50 per cent of the world’s population is under 30 years old. Also, current global trends of urbanization show that 50 per cent of the world’s population now live in cities. The convergence of these two global trends has immense implications for the economic, social and political landscapes of urban centres. And they represent unprecedented opportunity.
And at the centre of all this are youth – a growing force in shaping cities and in determining their success, a fact that often goes unnoticed and under appreciated. There is a strong motivation for cities to understand and account for what is important to young people and vice versa.
But do cities reflect the needs and aspirations of young people, enabling them to reach their full potential?
What would we discover, or perhaps uncover, if we took a closer look at cities through the eyes of youth around the world? And how would these experiences and perceptions compare with each other across the globe?
We asked ourselves, what would happen if we figured out a way to inspire and engaged thousands of young people to re-imagine the places where they live work and play?
So…YouthfulCities was born.
Now we have set out generate a rich and comprehensive reservoir of youth-centric knowledge to empower and engage youth and civic leaders in the process of building better cities.
